Teeth and molars contain a space with living tissue, especially blood vessels and nerves. In the root of the tooth or molar, this space is called the root canal.

Irritation, infection or damage can cause the tissue to become inflamed and even die. The inflammation often causes a throbbing pain and is dangerous for the tooth.

The dentist will take an X-ray and administer a local anesthetic. A hole will then be drilled in the tooth or molar. All inflamed or dead tissue will be removed through this hole using small files. The tooth will be thoroughly cleaned and filled on the inside. You may experience some pain after the treatment. In that case, you can take paracetamol, for example. If the pain is very severe or lasts for more than four days, you should contact your dentist.
